Carsington Water, a popular tourist destination for walking and boating

The chances are, if you are a visitor to the Peak District and are exploring the local area, you will find yourself near a reservoir at some point.

Here in the picturesque village of Ticknall, we are lucky enough to have some of Derbyshire’s best reservoirs located just a stone’s throw from our cosy and welcoming 4 star country inn and B&B, The Staff of Life.

We are situated in the perfect location to offer you home from home accommodation for your short stay or longer break, or you can simply enjoy a traditional home cooked meal in our restaurant after a busy day exploring the local reservoirs and national park.

Stay at The Staff of Life and Visit Staunton Harold Reservoir

Staunton Harold Reservoir can be found just a short distance from our wonderful village of Ticknall. It’s just a 1.5 mile walk from The Staff of Life, or a 7 minute drive.

This 210 acre reservoir was developed from one of six ponds on parkland at Calke Abbey, the ‘un-stately’ home which The Staff of Life is lucky enough to back on to. For walkers, although there is no circular route around the reservoir, there is a beautiful 6.9 mile circular walk that can be taken from Ticknall village, incorporating Staunton Harold Reservoir and Calke Abbey.

Why not start and end your circular route in the village and finish up with some good home-cooked food and refreshments with us here at The Staff of Life!

Alternatively, to work up an appetite you may prefer to spend time at the Staunton Harold Reservoir site and take part in some of the activities on offer. These include:

  • Sailing
  • Bird Watching
  • Walking
  • Fly Fishing

Or for a truly relaxing time, settle down on the grass and simply enjoy the stunning views around the reservoir.

Stay at The Staff of Life and Visit Carsington Water

When you make your base with us here at The Staff of Life, for a day out slightly further afield, we recommend you visit Carsington Water.

A pleasurable 45 minute drive away, it’s claim to fame is that it is the ninth largest reservoir in England and it is pretty impressive. It’s open waters, muddy shore and woodland make this another bird watchers paradise as it has become the perfect natural habitat for Grebes, Kingfishers and Buzzards.

If you have children, this is a fabulous day away. There are cycling routes; three miles for little legs and eight miles for longer legs, plus three walking routes depending on whether you prefer a leisurely stroll with the family or something a little more fast-paced. You may also horse ride around the reservoir. If you prefer to get out on (or in) the water, Carsington Water offers a range of watersports including rowing, canoeing, windsurfing and kayaking.

Whichever mode of transport you choose, you will always be able to appreciate and enjoy the breath-taking views of Carsington Water.

For your visit, don’t forget to take your picnic! Carsington Water has a pretty outdoor area suitable for an al-fresco lunch or snack and accessible BBQ facilities for use on those balmy summer days.

The Staff of Life team are more than happy to help you with your picnic choices for your day out. Simply give us advance notice if you would like food prepared and we will do our best to provide you with some tasty home-made treats.
